The Tempest: The calm after the storm
Oct 21, 2025

Friday night’s performance of The Tempest was truly something special. Our students delivered a spectacular interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic — full of humour, heart, and extraordinary talent.
Teachers and directors Mr Guy Durance and Ms Stephanie Symes reflected:
“After working with this amazing group on the Mary Poppins production last year, we knew we couldn’t wait another two years to do it all again. So, we took the leap and proposed staging a play this year — and what a journey it’s been!
We were blown away by the quality of the auditions. Most students arrived with their biggest monologues fully memorised, and many went above and beyond, researching past performances to develop their characters. There were definitely moments when we wondered if we’d bitten off more than we could chew — but the students never wavered. Their commitment, creativity, and teamwork carried the production through every rehearsal.
Behind Hamlet, The Tempest’s Prospero is considered one of Shakespeare’s most challenging roles — and for Kirra to master it at just 15 years of age is phenomenal. She learned over 800 lines, while the rest of the talented cast each averaged an impressive 152. Kirra brought power, depth, and grace to every scene. We can't wait to see where her talent takes her next.
Shaely had the audience in hysterics in her role as Trinculo — a gifted comedian who made the part entirely her own. She committed so fully to the bit of the drunken clown that we eventually had to replace the juice in her prop bottle with tea, just to avoid a sticky face!
Imogen’s portrayal of Alonsa was breathtaking — she brought the poise, professionalism, and the emotional depth of Meryl Streep herself. And our Year 7s were outstanding, showing that the future of Performing Arts at FCJ College is in excellent hands for years to come.
The audience also loved the interactive moments between Ferdinand and Miranda — all thanks to Nina and Noah's creativity. Their initiative added such warmth and charm to the show.
We couldn’t be prouder of this team — every student brought something special to the stage. Their dedication, enthusiasm, and courage made The Tempest an unforgettable success.”
