Step Inside FCJ College: A Final Look Before the Holiday Break

Jul 4, 2025

As we wrap up Term 2, it’s been a busy final week. But before the break begins, here’s a look at what’s been happening.

Our Year 8 cohort and Year 9 Drama students took part in a dynamic drama workshop—a fantastic opportunity to build teamwork, confidence, and stage presence in a fun and interactive setting.

Adding a touch of intrigue to the week, alumni Andrew contacted the College after hearing a radio segment about Time Capsules. It sparked a memory of one buried by his class in 1978 along the old Wedge Street fence, with it's location marked on the iron. With the fence long gone, Year 9 student Ryder generously lent his time and metal detecting equipment to search the area. While nothing has been uncovered just yet, the hunt continues with hope. We’ll keep you posted!

Meanwhile, our Year 10 English Journalism students have been exploring all facets of journalism—from ethics and interviews to writing and reporting. Their major project, FCJ News, is now in post-production and will premiere in Semester 2. One of the most captivating stories delves into the long-standing mystery of the FCJ basement, rumoured to have once had a secret tunnel to the Parish House. While students couldn’t descend the old rickety stairs, they did get the rare chance to unlock the door and peer into the dark depths below. In true journalistic spirit, they also left behind their own mark on FCJ history by sending a red paper airplane into the unknown. What was inside? Only time will tell.

In Year 7 Art, students have been learning about Tasmanian artist Tom O’Hearn and his approach to drawing without self-consciousness. “It’s the mistakes and imperfections,” he says, “that make life interesting.” To embrace this mindset, students explored drawing with markers taped to long sticks—breaking the habit of perfectionism and encouraging freedom in their lines.

They also ventured out of the art room for some en plein air sketching in the Benalla Gardens, spending ten focused minutes observing the scenery and drawing what they saw, rather than fixating on the page. Many found the experience calming and enjoyable, taking time to simply observe and create in a peaceful setting.

The Year 12 Common Room has also had a revival with the rediscovery of a long-forgotten table tennis table. With a new net in place, it’s become a hotspot for friendly competition during breaks.

Lastly, the first stage of shade sail installation over the decking near our new modular building is now complete, with the sail itself set to go up over the holidays—ready to provide shade and shelter in Term 3.

We wish all students, staff, and families a restful break and look forward to welcoming everyone back on Tuesday 22 July, recharged and ready for an energetic start to the new term. Enjoy!
