Stories have the power to transport us, to spark our imagination, and to connect us with big ideas. Few writers capture this better than William Shakespeare, whose play The Tempest will take centre stage in our upcoming play on Friday 17th October.
Shakespeare wrote plays in iambic pentameter. An example is with Hamlet; “To be, or not to be: that is the question". Iambic pentameter demands ten syllables. Ten syllables in the cadence of ta dum, ta dum etc.
Could you talk like this in everyday conversation?
I tried, without success: you be the judge:
Hello, my friend Barry, Carlton wins sometimes. (11 syllables)
Hello, my friend Barry, Carlton did win once. (11 syllables)
Hello my friend Barry, Carlton won once. (10 syllables – lacks a certain poetry through)
Others, with an FCJ College bent:
• Years at FCJ; hearts grow tenderly. (Not bad).
• At FCJ in Benalla, hearts are formed.
• Through faith we rise, with courage at our side.
• In books and thought, the seeds of hope are sown.
• A child who learns walks boldly into light.
Overall, very difficult.
While I cannot write or speak in iambic;
Key staff, and our willing students can.
Please do support our students by coming along to our inaugural play: The Tempest by William Shakespeare. Performed by 20 wonderful students under the tutelage of Steph Symes and Guy Durance. Bring the family for an entertaining night out more information regarding ticket sales will be out soon. I wish you every blessing heading into the break.
