Step Inside FCJ College: A Term Full of Achievement

Mar 20, 2026

Term 1 at FCJ College has been full of energy, creativity, and achievements, with students embracing new challenges, discovering their passions, and celebrating successes throughout the community.

This week, we celebrated Neurodiversity Week. A worldwide initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences. Through a range of engaging activities. Across the week, students enjoyed Mario Kart competition, Minecraft “Find the Brick,” DIY stress ball making, fidgets, sand play, brain teasers, board games, and even a Dino Discovery presentation. Our Year 7 students also took part in informative sessions, while families were invited to a parent information evening featuring expert insights.

A big thank you to our incredible NeuroClub crew, who worked for many weeks to bring this program together. Special recognition goes to Mitch and Riley Toms for designing and leading the Minecraft and Dino Discovery activities. Passionate and engaging leaders who created a fantastic experience for their peers. Neurodiversity Week is all about recognising and celebrating different ways of thinking, and at FCJ College we know our community is stronger because of it.

Our Year 9 students and their families began The Rite Journey with the Calling & Departure Ceremony. After exchanging heartfelt letters, students reflected privately before taking part in a symbolic ritual, writing on stones and casting their intentions into the water. This meaningful experience marks the start of a journey with families, supporting students to grow into confident and compassionate young adults.

The Unit 1 Outdoor and Environmental Studies class enjoyed a coastal trip filled with adventure. Despite the rain, it certainly didn’t dampen their spirits. Students spent most of their time in the water at Anglesea and exploring on foot, hiking through the Great Otway National Park near Lorne. The experience built confidence, resilience, and teamwork while deepening their connection with the natural environment.

Our Year 10 Design Technology – Metal class has been developing their practical skills, gaining confidence using a range of tools including MIG and arc welders, as well as 4-inch grinders. Alongside this, students have been refining their welding techniques across different machines and learning the safe and correct use of equipment.

Students have been busy fabricating welding screens and working on a variety of projects, with a special mention to Eddy for his leadership and the excellent work his team has done in producing the screens that will be utilised in the workshop.

Building on these foundational skills, several students have already begun designing and constructing their own major projects, including custom BBQs, fire pits, and other creative metal pieces. We look forward to sharing their progress next term.

Our Year 10 Journalism students have been busy interviewing members of the local community and writing professional news articles. Mrs DeFazio shared how wonderful it has been to watch students’ confidence grow as they take on the challenges of research, interviewing, and writing for a real audience. Selected pieces will begin being published, marking an exciting milestone for these impressive students.

We celebrated Term 1 with a whole school assembly, marking achievements and recognising the 2026 Student Representative Council. SRC members were presented with their badges, stepping into their role as the voice of their peers. Student voice is highly valued at FCJ College, and we look forward to the contributions these leaders will make across the College community. Our Social Justice and Environment Captains highlighted upcoming initiatives, including local community support, ongoing global outreach through the Philippines Immersion program, and next term’s Project Compassion initiative.

The Arts have seen a vibrant start to the year, with students participating in music ensembles, bands, and singing groups. The International Women’s Day Open Mic showcased student creativity, and excitement builds for the upcoming Easter Liturgy performance and next terms Let's Find Our Voice and Addam's Family Production rehearsals.

Sporting highlights have been plentiful and included the Swimming Carnival. Age group champions were celebrated and presented with medals by Principal Mr Joseph Mount, and FCJ College secured the Southern Ranges District Championship! Strong participation across other sports has further demonstrated the dedication, skill, and spirit of our students.

We also celebrated our Students of the Term, recognising six outstanding students across the year levels. Emily was acknowledged for her dedication and enthusiasm; Will for his resilience and strong work ethic; Abbey for her commitment to improvement and curiosity; Maddie for her kindness and determination; Charlee for her initiative and leadership; and Alicia for her focus and academic maturity. Each student is a very deserving recipient of this recognition.

Keep an eye on our social media pages to see all the photos of our outstanding students and end-of-term highlights. Thank you for stepping inside FCJ College this term—we’ve loved sharing the achievements, creativity, and progress of our students’ learning. We look forward to sharing their continued growth, exploring new experiences, and celebrating more successes together.
