Round Robin Comes Round Again

The first Round Robin, FCJ College’s interschool sports competition came round again on 24th February. FCJ College encourages competing in these sports as research indicates that students who attend sporting events both in school and outside of school have positive outcomes.

The majority of students travelled as far as Broadford and as close as Benalla to the many activities that were available. These sports included Volleyball, Cricket, Tennis, Lawn bowls and Netball.

Students and Staff started to depart to their events at around 9 am and teams started coming back to school at around 12:30 pm, with the majority of the teams returning by 2:30 pm.

Once the results had been collated, Sport Coordinator, Mr Benjamin Appleford announced the six teams that had made it through to the next stage. These teams include the year 7 girls, year 7 boys’ tennis, the intermediate girls tennis team, senior boys netball and the senior boys tennis.

Mr Appleford also stated that if too many students sign up for one sport, tryouts are held to decide who makes the team. These tryouts usually take place at lunch on the basketball courts and are used to determine which students are best suited for the team. Students who are not selected are then assigned to their second preference, which they selected earlier on SIMON when choosing their sports for the day.

An article written by the “National Sports & Physical Activity Convention” and published on June 10th 2025, focuses on a major study from the University of Sydney into school sports. This study followed more than 4000 students from ages 4 to 13 and revealed that students who actively participate in sport “record lower absenteeism, improved memory, concentration and stronger academic performance.” These students were also much more likely to go on and complete university.

Round Robin 2 is also slowly approaching. Students are set to depart school to go and compete in their chosen sport on 19th  May. Some of the sports available in this round include: badminton, soccer, and AFL.
